Sunday School for Youth
Sunday School for youth in Middle School and High School is called the “Justice League”. Each Sunday from 10:15-11 am we gather in the EYC room below the kitchen and watch short clips of video about social justice issues. We then discuss the clips and discuss how our Christian faith calls us to stand up against injustice.
EYC (Episcopal Youth Community)
The overall objective for St James EYC is to engage our youth with theological thinking that inspires them to be better servants of God. Our goal is to develop youth who don’t just talk about how what it means to follow God, but actually go out to make the world a better place. EYC meets every Sunday with youth in 6th-12th grade in the St James Youth Room. We begin EYC with a communal dinner provided by a different family each week. After dinner we sing worship music before settling down into a faith centered presentation and discussion.
Confirmation Class runs from March to May each year. Youth in grades 9-12 are invited to become confirmed in the Episcopal Church. This class is especially designed for high school youth.
On the 3rd Sunday of each month we visit the Rescue Mission in downtown Hendersonville. Rescue mission is a homeless shelter designed to feed and assist the homeless in finding jobs. On these nights we lead evening prayer and sing camp songs with the homeless.
La Capilla Math Program
Each summer EYC helps teach math to children at La Capilla, the Spanish speaking Episcopal Church in Hendersonville. All middle school and high school youth are invited to volunteer with other parishioners from St James.
This past summer 2018, EYC went to the country of Panama to work with the nonprofit PROMESA in sustainable agriculture. We had a great group of 12 youth and 8 adults. We are planning to go on a local mission trip this summer. If you would like to attend this year's mission trip you must volunteer with Apple Festival Parking, Candlemas Concert, and April Brunch Fundraiser! These fundraisers allow youth to attend the annual mission trip for free.
Our diocese offers several opportunities for youth to attend conferences and camp throughout the year. Each year the Middle School Conference is in September. The High School have Fall Conference in November and Spring Conference in March. Both Middle School and High School Youth are invited to attend Camp Henry in the Summer. St James also attends annually the diocesan SPLASH at Camp Ridgecrest, ski day at Cataloochee, and Lake Logan Festival. Click the link below for more information about diocesan events:
